Spring Weeding

Love to weed? Or Hate to weed? Sometimes therapy, sometimes a chore. We do a pretty good job overall of keeping the weeds at bay, but here are a few of my ‘weed enemies’ that I spend some extra time eliminating! What are your weed nemesis? PS LOOK at that beautiful garlic crop coming along this spring!!! 😉

Sprouts !!!

We are ever so thankful for everyone who’s supported our farm, so many folks in so many ways. We hope your garlic is sprouting as well, and let’s all look forward to many successful harvests in 2024!

Farmer’s Market Season

Farmer’s Market season is here for us! It’s the end of June and we are starting to harvest, the garlic is coming on strong as well as the lavender, along with lots of herbs and berries. The next few months will be filled with lots of great products to sell! We are really looking forward to seeing lots of you at the Clatskanie Farmer’s Market, beginning July 8th, we should be there each weekend until the end of the season! Terri is teaching a series of canning classes this year at the brand new Clatskanie Food Hub, so we did some talking about this to all the patrons visiting our booth as well!

March Garlic Progress!

Inchelium Red Garlic is great all around! Bonus shot of our amazing soil! ;-)

March roared in like a lion in our neck of the woods. Some Freezing weather, and tons of wind! We are definitely looking forward to the promise of Spring, and warmer days! One thing about growing garlic – no matter the weather, we can always go out and see progress! It’s amazing to see how resilient these plants are, and in fact they are thriving in the poor weather! Here’s a little update for our plants, these are five months old right now. Don’t forget to get yours ordered for delivery this fall. You won’t regret it next March 😉 Here is a slideshow of all 10 varieties we are offering this year for seed stock!

Garlic Scapes

**While we have them!**

There are different types of Garlic to grow, Some of our varieties are Hardneck Garlic, which is easily identified when breaking apart the head, there will be a hard stem running up the center. Just before this garlic is ready to dig, the plant begins to shoot out a scape, which is actually the flowering stem of the plant. Scapes are cut from the plant just as they start to curl, giving back energy to the head for bigger growth. If not removed, the garlic head would be smaller.

Scapes are amazing in flavor, in fact, they are a lot like a garlic flavored scallion! They are tasty in tons of recipes, grilled, sauteed, even pickled and fermented! Since they are only available once a year, we always look forward to scape time! They last for a couple months in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator, just simply put into a bag, and leave it open for air circulation to prevent moisture buildup.

With over 1,000 hard neck garlic getting close to harvest, you can imagine that we will be flooded with scapes very soon. The next 30 days should be filled with harvesting them!

If you are local to our farm, we would love to sell you some scapes. Just message us and we can arrange a time/date for pickup.

Here are some great recipes for using scapes!
