Signs of Fall
Fall is starting to be in the air. That means garlic planting will be soon! Are you ready? We’ve still got lots of great garlic for seed. Also time to trim lavender, and harvest is on everywhere in the garden! Cooler nights, foggy mornings, and dew on the grass. And, the Canadian gees are starting to fly overheard. Soon they will be hanging out in the pastures, and flying over by the thousands. Not ready for summer to end, but these glorious images help a lot!
Garlic Festival
On Saturday, August 20, we participated in a Garlic Festival at the Clatskanie Farmer’s Market. This was the seventh annual festival, and for us, it was the first time vending at this market!
We want to thank everyone associated with the market, it was a real joy to be a vendor! We had a very busy day, and a lot of garlic and lavender went home with new owners! Thank YOU to all the great customers, lots of good dialogue and questions about our offerings.
It was a great opportunity to find out what our customers are looking for. We definitely had a crowd that looked for Spicy! Spicy Pickled Garlic and Spicy seed garlic sold out quickly! Also we had a chance to talk with other garlic growers, and network.
A very successful adventure!
Thank you, Clatskanie Farmer’s Market!
Garlic Scapes
**While we have them!**
There are different types of Garlic to grow, Some of our varieties are Hardneck Garlic, which is easily identified when breaking apart the head, there will be a hard stem running up the center. Just before this garlic is ready to dig, the plant begins to shoot out a scape, which is actually the flowering stem of the plant. Scapes are cut from the plant just as they start to curl, giving back energy to the head for bigger growth. If not removed, the garlic head would be smaller.
Scapes are amazing in flavor, in fact, they are a lot like a garlic flavored scallion! They are tasty in tons of recipes, grilled, sauteed, even pickled and fermented! Since they are only available once a year, we always look forward to scape time! They last for a couple months in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator, just simply put into a bag, and leave it open for air circulation to prevent moisture buildup.
With over 1,000 hard neck garlic getting close to harvest, you can imagine that we will be flooded with scapes very soon. The next 30 days should be filled with harvesting them!
If you are local to our farm, we would love to sell you some scapes. Just message us and we can arrange a time/date for pickup.
Here are some great recipes for using scapes!

Spring (or so it says…) Garlic
This Spring has been a wet one for certain in the PNW! Last year, we were irrigating garlic by May 1st and this year, it looks as though Mother Nature is doing the work for us! As evidenced by grass growing an inch a day! That being said, the garlic is looking ah-maz-ing thus far. We have an early variety, China Stripe, that will be ready to dig in a few weeks. We’ve already harvested Scapes, (see related post about Scapes) and now we need two good dry weeks to help this finish out before dig.
Fall Garlic Planting
Fall time means it’s time to get Garlic into the ground! We are taking most of that beautiful garlic we grew last year and investing it into seeding for a larger harvest next year, enabling us to have a good quantity of both Seed and Culinary Garlic for 2022!
Our goal this year is to get 2200 heads of garlic into production. We are just thrilled with the success of the 2020 plant! We’ve had heads of Garlic that at harvest weighed over 1 pound! Amazing!
The fertile soils of the Columbia River Basin really don’t disappoint. No wonder our grandparents had great success growing Mint, and running a dairy, raising horses and cattle, along with the epic gardens our family has used for food, both fresh and preserved, for over 60 years now.
